HOW CHOKING CAN AFFECT THE HEALTH OR SAFETY OF INFANTS
Choking is a major health risk to infants of late. This is because they have a small airways or tracts that obstruct the flowing of food when trying to swallow it. The infants are affected because they lack the needed experience of chewing and swallowing food. When infant has been choked, they lack energy that will enable them to cough forcefully so as to remove what has stuck on their airways. This situation may lead to the death of the infant.
RECCOMENDATIONS ON ACCIDENT PREVENTION & SAFETY PROMOTION OF INFANTS

Parents should know when the child should start taking solid foods which should be at least when they are 4 months of age.

Infants should avoid small slippery foods, dry foods and sticky or tough foods.

Never allow the infants to play, talk, walk or run while eating since this one puts them at risk.

Keep-off latex balloons, small balls, marbles, and adult toys from reach of the infants.

Keep off hazardous objects out of reach i.e. safety pins, coins, pens, buttons, baby powders & bottle tops.
STEPS TO TAKE WHEN THIS CONDITION ARISES
Food and small particles may lead to choking of an infant.
When an infant has been choked, hold the infant face down on your forearm then thump firmly on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand.
If the problem persists, then you should seek medical advice.
