My faith in God informs how I approach every single day. Not only does it provide a set of values and ethics by which to live my life — reminding me to take personal responsibility for my actions and giving me a foundation upon which to base my decisions — but it is also a source of strength, comfort, and joy. Actively pursuing a personal relationship with God has been one of the most difficult and meaningful endeavor of my life; and it continues to change me from the inside out.
This faith, and the experiences I have had as I pursue it, has led me to nursing: a profession where I know I can have a real impact on the lives of others, as well as affect a change — however small — in the world as a whole. Just as my commitment to my faith provides me with a never-ending set of new questions and tests, a career as a nurse would require me to engage with a dynamic work environment that changes daily, with challenges both intellectual and emotional. I want to be a competent professional capable of explaining and carrying out procedures that the layman might find complex or frightening, but the social aspect of the nursing field is critical as well: I want to be there when people need a hug or a shoulder to cry on. Providing comfort and relief to the sick and injured is the principle central to the dogma of my religion.
I am aware that I will have days both good and bad over the course of my career. However, I found that my faith could help me overcome even obstacles that may seem insurmountable at first glance. This understanding has lent my character some steadiness and a constancy, a calmness or a disinclination to panic that I think will be extremely valuable in the career where patients’ lives and health may be on the line. My faith has made me someone who wants to live a life in the service for others, but it has also taught me about believing in something almost intangible, which can be neither seen nor touched — and, by this, it has taught me to believe in myself.
