Critical Review: Research Rationale & Questions

Resource Redeployment Following Horizontal Acquisitions in Europe and North America, 1988–1992, by Laurence Capron, Pierre Dussauge and Will Mitchell.
The paper focuses on redeployment of resources between target and acquiring businesses after acquiring them horizontally. It critically evaluates the perspectives on the resources that are important and subject to market failure (Capron & Hulland, 1998). Aspects that are covered in the report include managerial, R&D, marketing, manufacturing, and financial resources.
The main idea is to show that targets and acquirers that horizontally acquisitions redeploy resources frequently (Capron & Hulland, 1998). In addition it makes the reader understand that as the asymmetry of the merger parties increases the magnitude of redeployment of each resource. It tackles that issues that challenges businesses to focus on the market for business rather than market for resources. The businesses should focus on evolutionary issues that emphasis on organizational differences in the markets that are competitive.
Research Type
The research is a qualitative paper where horizontal acquisitions are analyzed on their resources deployment. This type is chosen in order to investigate the two arguments on market failure incentives in the acquisition of businesses, which are firstly; the frequent redeployment of resources after horizontal acquisitions. Secondly is that the stronger firm has better incentives so as to deploy the resources to the weaker firm. The five categories i.e. managerial, R&D, marketing, manufacturing, and financial resources are then are then analyzed on their effects on horizontal acquisitions (Capron & Hulland, 1998). The effect of the relativity of the strength of the resource redeployed is also analyzed in that the target and acquirer are given the options.
Research Method
The data is collected from a survey from American and European companies in the same industry in 1994. The sample collected data from 2020 mergers and acquisition that were performed in the period 1988 – 1992. The companies were those with the level 4 of the US Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). The period chosen i.e. 1988 – 1992 was for the reason that there was no need to include companies that had recently considered merging and their dealings were not yet finalized. The source of the data was the international merger yearbook (1990, 1991, 1992); the Merger and Acquisition Sourcebook (1990, 1991, 1992), Mergers and Acquisitions International (1990, 1991, 1992), and Fusions ET Acquisitions (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992) (Capron & Hulland, 1998).
The companies in question were spread across Europe where a proportion of 73% of the firms that acquired other companies and 59% of the targeted companies were in France, United States and United Kingdom.
The survey was in four phases where the first phase involved the development of scales of measurements that were based on the literature and other suggestions from consultants. This led to evaluation of five types of resources to be used in the study and the development of a formal questionnaire (Capron & Hulland, 1998).
The second phase was the translation of the questionnaire into different languages such as French. Interviews were also held with executives that had a wealth of knowledge on the mergers so as to add value to the data.
The third phase was a pilot survey where revised instruments of survey were applied in that the executives and CEOs in 10 firms that had acquired others were interviewed. A final version of a questionnaire was drafted from the findings (Capron & Hulland, 1998). The fourth phase involved sourcing information from the different firms that were acquiring where the CEOs would respond to a given questionnaire. From the survey 273 responses were received and 20 were eliminated; this left a total of 273 sets of acquisitions to be reviewed. The unique targets were 253 while unique acquirers were 190.
Research Design Problem
The major problem in the data was the over representation of French firms and the under representation of the US and UK firms (Capron & Hulland, 1998). The other bias was the collection of data from executives who would definitely give only the positive information about their firms.

The paper that your writers did for me on the topic of, The Psychological Effects of Fluorescent Lighting in the Workplace,” was right on the money! They included my long list of customizations and did not charge extra for them. The formatting was just right. There were no grammatical errors. The length was what it was supposed to be. I am so happy that I chose to let the EssaysEmpire.com writers take care of my paper for me. I will choose this writing service again without hesitation. |

So often, when one deals with customer service, he or she is treated rudely. That was not the case with EssaysEmpire.com. The agents were helpful and friendly, knowledable and concerned. I, for one, was astounded with their competence. When it came down to the actual written material that I ordered, it was much better than I had anticipated. There are clearly some expert writers who work for EssaysEmpire.com. I would rate this writing service as exceptional, 5 stars out of 5 stars. I will happily return when I need help with another written work. |

Dear EssaysEmpire.com, I would like to put in a good word for Writer #32412. He was really under the gun. I didn’t give him much notice because I had my dates mixed up and my paper was due sooner than I expected. He didn’t let me down, though. He wrote until the paper was perfected. I handed it in on time got an A+ and wish your writers could accept tips, because I would leave this guy a HUGE one! |

I would like to say thanks to writer #48376 for doing such an astonishing job on my paper. I really gave him very little to go on. Still, he was able to do the research and come up with a champion paper for me. I am speechless. I didn’t expect anything nearly this good. |

I am fully satisfied with my research paper. It cannot have been easy for your writers to compose! The topic is called, "PARALLEL ALGORITHM FOR MULTI-DIMENSIONAL MATRIX MULTIPLICATION OPERATIONS REPRESENTATION USING KARNAUGH MAP”. That is a very difficult topic! However, your writers developed an algorithm, included a diagram and a graph and related multi-dimensional matrix multiplication perfectly. I am thrilled with the work I received and will be using your company again in the near future. Thank you for all of your hard work on this project. I love it! |

I am 100% satisfied with the writer that you assigned to my project. This person understood exactly what I needed, even though I’m not the best communicator and the instructions were tedious and difficult. I felt certain I would have to send my paper back for a number of revisions, but I didn’t. The writer was able to convey exactly what I wished to express and he did it in record time! Thanks for everything. EssaysEmpire.com is the greatest! |

I was trying to choose between EssaysEmpire.com and another online writing service and I didn’t know which one to pick. Then, I began to read reviews. I didn’t read even one thing negative about EssaysEmpire.com, and the other site was fraught with complaints. I went with EssaysEmpire.com, and it turned out that all the good things I had read about the service were true. My paper was fully guaranteed, but it was A-1 quality. The customer service people were great. The prices were right. Now, I am a devoted fan. When I need help with my writing, I go straight to EssaysEmpire.com! |

I had a hard time articulating what my professor wanted, so I was able to speak straight to my writer. After I had explained a little bit, I could tell he understood everything. He then took the ball and ran with it, so to speak. He wrote my paper in two days and it was the picture of perfection! I am very grateful that he knew what to do and how to do it so perfectly. |

There are four things that I look for in a good writing service. #1. They have to be fast. A good writing service won’t miss an important deadline. #2. A good writing service will let customers actually talk to the writer who is working on their customer’s papers, so the customer can work out important details. #3. A good writing service will have a user-friendly website that is easy for the customer to use and #4, a good writing service will offer quality guarantees. EssaysEmpire.com meets all of this criteria and more. EssaysEmpire.com is the best writing service and has the reputation to prove it. I wouldn’t even consider using another writing service since experiencing the excellence that is EssaysEmpire.com! |
